Hoover Rojak, 豪华羅雜

The famous Balestier Hoover Rojak, i am sure most people heard about it. At any time of the day, queue are always formed and plates of rojak are seen on almost every table in the Whampoa hawker.

Generous serving of the peanuts bits.

Ingredients includes; tau pok, youtiao (油条), bean sprout, cucumber, mango, turnip and pineapple.

I have to say that i am not really impressed with the rojak. There are better ones and other choices that are more value for money. I think that their $3 portion is really small.
Still, i would encourage people to give it a try.

Baystreet 21

I know i have been missing in action for some time, in my lazy mode and been busy with my work as well.
I will be uploading photos of various food places which i had visited but did not diligently review them on time {guilty}.

Baystreet 21 - the unknown gourmet place.

Situated in the corner of the 2nd storey of IMM building and near the carpark entrance, it is easy to miss Baystreet 21 unless you drive.

Baystreet serves various cuisines such as Western, Indonesian, Nyonya, Chinese and Thai food which you be spolit for choices. Another point to take note is their price is reasonable and they have value sets for those who can't make up their mind on what to eat.

One of my favourite dish is the sliced fish been hoon soup. And it is only available every Tues, Thurs and Sat! For those who loves to eat fish head, they do have it as well.

So what so special about it?

I did not ask my bee hoon soup to be served this way but rather this is how the dish has been served all along. Isn't it brilliant? In order not to change the texture of the nicely fried and crispy sliced fish, the chef served the fish separately from the soup.

The serving of the sliced fish was generous and its was always freshly fried whenever i ordered it.

The soup was cooked with salted vegetables as you can see, tomatoes and fried shallots was added for flavourng.

Another recommended would be their seafood fried kway teow.
A truly must try.
For those who likes to eat Tzi Char would know, the smell of the wok for fried kway teow is a must.
The whole plate was generously filled with seafood and fried spring onion.
And for those who is health conscious, it is not oily at all.
You won't feel a layer of oil on your lips after that.

Highly recommeding the sliced fish bee hoon soup!
Be sure to take note of the days which this dish will be served and sometimes it sold out so fast that you might not even get to taste it after lunch time.

Overall, Baystreet 21 is more to a family restuarant and the portion for every dishes is quite filling.
Hearty meal is easily achievable :)

Madeleine's Portuguese Egg Tart

I am sure most of us have ate Madeleine's portuguese egg tart before.
Nowadays, you would only see Madeleine in form of pushcart or in pasar malam.
Still remember there was once a small outlet outside Far East Plaza.
Last week, i came across the food bazaar in Novena Sq and it caught my attention :) Miss the taste of it.

The mini egg tarts were sold at 12 for $9.

The same old packaging over the years, iconic dutch lady with the tart in hand.

I can't say it is better than famous Tat Cheong in HK Central but well, it is of certain standard.
The multi-layered crust is puffy and the texture of the egg is as smooth as beancurd. This is appealing enough for people to pop in more than one and feeling guilty!

My Toast

My first impression; another Old Town?
To be frank, i find that it is much better than Old Town.

Kopi $1.40

Clear and clean setup, with menu on top and sides of the counter.
Thick Toast with Butter and Chicken Floss $1.80
Look how generous is the floss being spread over the thick toast.

Mee Siam $3.50
Decent taste, nothing to pick on.

Famous KL Curry Chicken with Toast $5.50
Normally, curry will comes with sliced baguette bread.
But at My Toast, curry comes with 2 slices of toast bread (as shown) which greatly enhanced the taste.

Close up and you could see the Tau Pok in the curry.

 My French Toast Special $3.20
Thickly spread of peanut butter coupled with golden brown french toast bread, finished off with honey on top.
A must try for those that love peanut butter!

Petaling Street Chee Cheong Fun - Curry $2.80
Heard that its common in KL but definately not in SG.
Taste like curry Kuey Teow to me, and a bit bland.

Nasi Lemak $4.50
Combination of chicken wing, ikan bilis and sunny side-up egg.
Portion and taste are decent but i like the chicken wing which is not oily and with right level of marination.

My recommendation:

Chocolat Factory

125 grams of BIG emotions?
How is emotions being weigh and put a price tag on it?
Thats how choclate factory uses their chocolate to weigh against the happy emotions that you will be able to get from chocolate!

Notice each bright yellow box imprinted with the phase " the pleasure boxes".

Overall, i can't comment much on the quality as i only manage to eat one piece out of the whole box.
(Will update this entry when there is more information)
However, when i was making my choices, the variety available seems to be lesser than other chocolate boutique.
I am definitely attracted to the clean and clear message of emotions out of CHOCOLATE :)
Are you?

Coffee Bean Breakfast

Anyone tried the Coffee Bean Breakfast yet???
It has been a long time since i go to the nearby coffee bean outlet on a lazy sat morning.

Brek-O-Day Breakfast ($7.70)
I ordered the brek-o-day set which comes with free flow of coffee or tea.
A good start for the day when you just want to laze around some place, sipping coffee and read the papers.

Well, i was there writting; updating my new 2011 organiser and of course with my coffee in hand :)

Greetings (P.Osh)

During the festive season, greetings from corporate partners is an unspoken practice in the industry.
This year, the most memorable is the 5-piece customised brownies.

My colleague done a check online and the webby specifically stated that it will only last for 3 days. Moreover, such customisation cost about $34!

Close up of the "christmas tree".
Seriously, i was never a fan of brownie. My reaction from the first bite was: Soooooooo SWEET!
I didn't survive a 3rd bite....
However, i believe with the attractive designs and customisation service available, P.Osh will still win alot of votes.
Anyone interested can check it out at their outlet at Dhoby Ghaut :)

贡茶 (Gong Cha)

Yes, i know that its has been a trend in SG for long time. I first tried Gong Cha when it opened its outlet in Novena Sq. Pictures taken but have not done any upload :P

贡茶 - 献给宫廷的茶,tea fit for royalty.

This craze has been going around and drinking Gong Cha is like a must beverage after the hush hush 1-hr lunch for each office lady.

Outlet at Novena SQ

Menu for all the teas varieties as well as others such as juice and coffee

Each signature Gong Cha is labelled with the preferred way to savour the drink

You may placed your customised drink in accordance to the level of sweetness and any add-ons.
To prevent any mix up of the drinks, each cup will be labelled with the type of tea and the level of sweetness selected.
Isn't that friendly :)
I have tried KOI some times back, but i personally felt that Gong Cha offers more varieties and good quality on the add-ons such as jelly and pearl. I particularly love their Ai-Yu jelly, 爱玉冻 and Herbal jelly, 仙草冻.

Recommendation:
Must try their signature Gong Cha (A1-A4) with add-ons of your choice.
Another special one would be (D11) Fresh milk with Herbal jelly, 鲜奶仙草冻. I have attempted to modify my order to mix it with Ai-Yu jelly which creates a very unique taste.
And, yes, it tasted good. Even the crew also praise me for that, heeeeee.

Word of advice:
Really need to try from Novena outlet becos i feel that the quality is not consistent for the other outlets.

Food from Muar.

Oops... Din realise my last post was 3 months ago!!
Have a number of backlog reviews and pics waiting for me to sort.

Went for a 1 day trip to Muar to have durians at the farm and ate some of the famous local delicacies.
Therefore decided to share some of the pics here :)
P/s: The durian is still constantly on my mind...

Uncle choosing the good ones and going into action.

The best.... slurp!

If customers wanted to buy the durians back to Singapore, the farm provides the option of transferring the durian to tupperware, for good convenience.

The famous Kee Mei Siew Pow (烧包) in Seremban.
Looks like a normal and plain store but taste really good.

In closer look.
There are 2 types of filling; chicken or pork meat.

The filling is not dry and most importantly you can still savour the sauce of the meat even when u heat it up after 1 or 2 days.

Kuih Bahulu, chocolate chip flavour (Johor Bahru)
No matter which store you bought it, it always taste better than the one sold in Singapore.

Rice Dumpling

Its time of the year again.
Rice dumpling can be seen anywhere nowadays.
This year i did not take part in the rice dumpling making session, but still i want to share my mum's product :)
With all my favourite ingredient; salted egg yolk, mushroom, chestnut and pork, a Hokkien rice dumpling is completed.
I find that the most important step in making rice dumpling lies on the pre-frying of the rice and meat. The marinating of the meat must be just nice and it could be just abit more salty to complement the tasteless rice.

After eating a certain amount of rice dumplings, the best way to cleanse your stomach abit is to eat with plain porridge. For those who still cant resist eating can try this!

Amazing Thailand 2010 - Food version Two

It has been quite a while, busy with work. Been wanted to post some photos for this restaurant that i have been to, during my Bangkok trip early this year. Well, hope this place is not badly affected by the political issue lately.

Joe Louis, traditional Thai puppet theatre located at Suan Lam night market at Lumpini. If you love puppet shows and want to capture the intricate movements and fascinating storyline which was once awarded best traditional puppet show at the International Puppet Festival, be sure to check out the timing of the show at the theatre.

The restaurant is just beside the theatre, which serves traditional Thai food. It is packed with different groups of diners, and of course mainly tourists.

I will always order Phai Thai in any Thai restaurant.
Much, much better than any of the Phai Thai i had in Singapore. Fried with simple ingredients like bean sprout, egg and chicken meat. The wetness of the Kway Teow and the garlic taste just nice.

(Big Head) Prawn Tom Yam Gong
Prawns are very fresh and most importantly, the broth is very tasty. It is not just the usual plain tom yam soup base, it probably have been simmered with the prawn and fish bone.

Glass noodle seafood salad
I like the sharp taste of the sour and spicy of it. The chef has grasped the extent of both flavors to the right level.

Tea Loft (Food Opera)

Tea Loft, which locates at basement 4, ION Orchard form part of the food court (Food Opera). Another subsidary of Bread Talk re-packaged with more prestige furnishing of the english tea room concept. It serves similar type of local food like Toast Box except the expansion of the drinks variety such as Coffee Melaka and Yuan Yang Jelly-O.

English tea room deco with the back connected with Food Opera.
Return to the basic, coffee of the day.
Personally, i think Bread Talk have better quality, coffee bean could have been burnt.

Peanut butter thick toast; melts perfectly with the right temperature of the toast.

Also have a soft spot for apple pie.
Caught my eye as it is presented in square shape and green apple is used instead.
Fruits are often naturally tart and it gives the freshness in flavour to a dish. Sadly, the sponge cake beneath is awful and does not contain any flavour of apple. The whole apple pie is excessively baked and the apple slices on top has desiccated.

Would not go back for the food undeniably, but maybe for the drinks instead.
