翡翠皇宫酒家 Crystal Jade Palace Restaurant

CH | C | LATE Research Facility

Discovered this new brand in town, with the concept of chocolate boutique + café. Well, not exactly very new as it has been located at Millenia Walk since late last year.

Beside the name that tells all, by the presentation and outlook of the store, I guess no one could link to chocolate in the first instance.

The boutique shop offers up to 100 different flavours of chocolate bars; from the usual flavor of Nut, Fruit series to Connoisseur and even Tea series. The packaging of the chocolate bars is generously splashed with alluring colors that make your eyes wide open. The polite staff told me that they make these chocolate in a local factory with all the imported ingredients.

Not only chocolate, Chocolate research facility also sells merchandise like in-house printed T-shirt and mugs. The café counter serves hot drinks like hot chocolate, coffee & tea to cold drinks like flavoured iced tea & the café is able to hold up to seating of 10 persons.

The cardboard-material drawers on the walls stores all the chocolate bars and the merchandises.

Noticed the different colors used for the packaging for different flavours and series. Each bar is priced between $8 - $12.
Unfortunately I do not have any craving for chocolate that day and I am by nature not a chocolate person so I did not attempt to get any. I guess based on the pricing, it quite steep. Isn’t it?

But I will definitely try it when I get better, now recovering from a serious flu…

Dorayaki

The food of my favourite cartoon character, Doraemon; the red bean paste filled pancake.

Brought this snack when i popped by Bugis for lunch last week. It was the Japan fair held by Cold Storage at the atrium of Bugis Junction. It was air flown from Japan and could last appro. 3 weeks. Price is $2 per piece.

The packaging is convenient & it look sweet.

The green color packaging is green tea flavour which is cream based. Not to my liking at all as i prefer genuine filling.

Look at the solid red bean filling.
The red bean filling is not too sweet and the pancake is light and fluffy with a spongy texture.

Will definately get it if i sees it again. =)

Madeline-Recipe

Mr. Fong has been bugging me for the recipe of Madeline. Finally got it from my Dear Chef =)

Part 1Yolk 60gm
Sugar 10gm
Honey 15gm

Part 2Egg White 60gm
Sugar 75gm

Part 3Salt 1gm
Baking Power 3gm
Cake Flour 90gm
Lemon Zest 1/2 no.
Soft Butter 90gm

Method:-

1. Mix the yolk, sugar and honey together.

2. Whip egg white and sugar in a pastry mixer till the egg white firms up to be ribbon stage.

3. Mix all the ingredient in part 3 with part 1.

Next, slowly fold into the egg white bit by bit till mixture smoothens.
Pour into mold, bake at 180 °c.

Timing depends on how big is the mould that one is pouring, if small, about 8-10, till golden brown.

So now i just have to wait for Mr. Fong to bake his Madeline and to bring it to me. Heeeee...

Pontini (Valentine Day)

I had finally got back all my pictures for the Valentine dinner that I had with J. He had secretly reserved a table at Pontini about a month before CNY =)
Well, it our first time having Valentine dinner together, while the rest of the years, as a chef he cook for others!

Pontini is an Italian fine dining restaurant and it is one of the hosting restaurants for World Gourmet Summit. It is defiantly worth to mention that Chef Michele Pavanello had returned to Pontini in 2007 after his success in II Lido.

The ambience of the place is of my liking; posh lighting and decor, dimmed incandescent lighting and servers with good attitude. The restaurant served a 6-course meal for Valentine Day with an extra choice of main course which is $188 per couple.

Saffron-baked Hokkaido Scallop with warm Asparagus Salad
Really fresh scallop which matches well with the saffron sauce.

Homemade Tarragon Tagliolini with Oyster Ragout and Caviar
My favourite out of all the dishes, however i could hardly see any caviar. And i wish they could serve more than 1 oyster.

Pan-roasted European Seabass with Langoustine Sauce & Baby Spinach
To my disappointment, I can't differentiate from the taste of the meat that it is really european seabass. The spinach is scantily blanched. (J suggested that it could be local seabass.)

Seared Grain-fed Beef Tenderloin with Bone Marrow & White Truffle Emulsion
One of the 2 main courses beside the seabass which is much better. The tenderloin is perfectly cooked, nicely mixed with the white truffle... yummy...

Dark Chocolate Terrine with Rashberry Sorbet
It was too sour for the sorbet that i give up after 2 bites. Good try for 2 extreme flavours to exist on 1 plate.

Surprise from the manager whom treated me my all time favourite; Tiramisu
With the first look, i thought there is too much of mascarpone cheese, but to my surprise, it was just nice. I personally prefer tiramisu that is not too moist, and this just fits in to what i want.

I would definately go back again as the ambience is really smoothing and comfortable. And of course, the food is really nice and you get to try the ever-changing creation from Chef Michele Pavanello.

Delicious snack from Japan

All thanks to Mr. Fong that i get to taste the delicious snack from Japan. Envious of him when i was told of his whole journey by train, this time round he tour around Japan instead of just staying in Tokyo. This kind of travelling would be a good experience as you get to explore and enjoy the beautiful scenic places of Japan but not just the busy & crowded Tokyo.

Had asked him to bring me some real sakura ebi, but he missed that out. So he get me this sakura ebi biscuit instead. Haaa.. but it taste good and very fresh too. He get it from the Hakone region, near Mount Fuji.

Look at the sweet packaging!

This is a must have!! Tokyo Banana, by the name, u know you can only get this in Tokyo. The filling is so fresh and natural. It can only last about 6 days from the manufacturing date. Yummy!

Kim's Family Food

Been wanted to try out this Korean restaurant that is hidden around the corner near Chun Tin court. Decided to give it a try last month when J & I simply do not know where to go for dinner after work :)

Kim's is a family owned restaurant, with simple decoration of Korea culture. The owner's son is so polite that you will feel uneasy by the 3rd time he said “Thank you” for each dishes you have ordered from him. First impression upon reading the menu is, you just simply do not know what to order. The wording is messy and you might just need some time to make your selection.

It is almost full house on a weekday nite. Diners are mainly Koreans.

What always makes me excited in a Korean restaurant is to anticipate the side dishes that are available for the day. To my surprise, Kim’s serves up to 10 side dishes that include Saba fish. Yes, SABA fish. I don't think that any other restaurant would do that? (Correct me if I am wrong.) The other side dishes includes Kimchi, potato salad, bean pasted vegetable etc…

Fried Rice Cake, with sliced fish cake and cabbage.
The rice cake is quite chewy, and it was more to a spicy version but it taste good. Love the
crunchyness of the cabbage.

The BBQ pork, more to salty side, definitely must be eaten with rice. It looks cold as thou it has been left out for sometime, but as you put it into your mouth, it burns. No taste of porky smell. Good!

The Ginseng Chicken soup which we waited for long time. Wanted to give up already when it arrived at our table. Serves piping hot but not to my expectation as I finds it too bland, can’t really taste the Ginseng. Noted that the soup has been added with smashed peanuts on top to add on extra fragrance to the soup.

We could not finish everything, as the portion are quite big. All this add up to about $50+ which is quite reasonable as compare to most Korean restuarant. Kim's does not charge 10% service charge and there are freebies to be given on different week.

As we are just too full, we did not took our 2 cans of free drinks :)

A worthwhile to try, Korean restuarant.
